Some Tips on Choosing the Right Drill Bit For Your Drill

When it is time to bore a hole, a drill bit attached to the end of a power drill is often the most efficient method. Bits need to be selected to match both the job and the material. While there are special types that do not fall into traditional measuring standards, most are made in either standard or metric sizes. Most bits are used to make round holes, but some of the special ones create various shapes.

Cutting Bits

The most common type in use today is the twist bit. It can be used to bore holes in metal, wood, and plastic depending on the angle and fluting of the bit. Twist bits are commonly available in many sizes, from the tiny ones with a diameter of about two thousandths of an inch to those with a diameter approaching four inches. Lengths for home use can reach almost forty inches.

Cutting Bits

Center bits often are used for metals to make a starter hole that will be drilled with a larger bit. However, the true purpose of center bits is to make an indentation for a lathe. Spotting bits are actually the preferred choice for starter holes.

When the job calls for enlarging a hole that already exists, core or reamer bits can be used. The choice is determined by how much the hole needs to be enlarged. Reamers should be used when only a small increase is needed, while cores should be used when much more material must be removed.

A brad point or dowel bit is the same thing, and these are sometimes referred to as lip and spurs. They are often chosen for use on wood and plastic. They are cousins of the twist style, but can produce a neater hole. A twist bit can catch and pull fibers, leaving a messy hole.

Paddle or spade bits are often used with wood, although they can cause splintering when exiting. They are made almost entirely for hand drills. Woodworkers often prize them because they can produce a neater hole than most twist bits.

One type that is very popular with construction workers is the speed or step bit, also called a Unibit. These can drill holes in numerous sizes, eliminating the need to switch bits for each new task. They work with plywood, particle board, sheet rock, and many more materials.

Masonry bits are designed for use with an electric or battery powered hammer drill. Hammering of the masonry at the end of the bit helps increase penetration. They are marketed in a wide array of sizes as well as lengths.

Electricians have helped make installer bits popular. These may also be called bell hangers. The bit itself features a hole, and when the bit is inserted, it can fish wiring out from between walls and bring it back.

By selecting the proper type and size you need for the job to be performed, you can finish faster and with neater results. Most bits can be used with a portable electric drill, but there are times when you may have to resort to a hand bit. Fortunately, these times occur only rarely.

MLCS 10807 TripleWing Flush Trim Bit 1/2-Inch Diameter by 2-Inch Cutting Length Overview

MLCS Tri (TM) carbide-tipped router bits are at the vanguard of routing technology. Larger cutters with an extra cutting blade (versus standard 2-flute bits) save time by allowing more aggressive cuts, and therefore, fewer passes. These 1/2" shank bits can be run at reduced speeds, helping to eliminate burning on problem woods, such as, cherry, oak, and others. The August '06 Workbench Magazine Review states: "While two flute bits can leave cutter marks...these three-flute bits produce consistently smooth cuts." TripleWing (TM) Flush Trim Bits are for use in trimming laminates and pattern routing. 1/2" Large Diameter, 2" Cutting Length, 1/2" Shank

Beware of Bug Bites

During warmer seasons, bug bites are prevalent. Whether you're out in the yard cutting the grass or taking a hike through the woods, you have to be careful. If bug bites are not properly cared for, they can affect your health.

Cutting Bits

Bug bites can be itchy and cause discomfort, but they can also be very dangerous. To prevent bug bites, wear bug repellents if you are going to be outdoors. Also wear appropriate clothing for outdoor activities to protect your body.

Cutting Bits

I know how painful and serious bug bites can be. When I was in high school, I experienced the wrath of the brown recluse spider. One day while I was laying out in my backyard with a friend of mine, I noticed a red spot on the inside of my forearm. At first I thought nothing of it because it looked like a mosquito bite. I kept the area clean and I assumed it would get well within a few days. I was wrong. The spot grew progressively worse over the course of a week. The little red spot turned into a large swollen lump. It was both sore and extremely painful. I began to notice a black spot in the center of the bite mark and I realized the redness was spreading up my arm. That's when I knew it was time to go to the doctor.

I only wish I would have gone to a physician little earlier but I had no idea that I had even been bitten by a spider. I am lucky my case was not worse than it was because it could have turned into a very serious situation. Unfortunately, I did have to get my arm lanced, which was not a fun experience. With prescribed medications, the bite healed within a few weeks. I still have a scar, which reminds me on a daily basis to be more cautious when I go outdoors.

A Finger Lickin Dove Recipe

4 dove (debreasted and deboned)

Cutting Bits

1/4 stick of butter

Cutting Bits

minced garlic(not power and not salt)

Salt and pepper

can of your favorite beer

This recipe is for at the dove lease or deer camp. First of all you want to take the can of beer(unopened) and carefully cut the top of the can off, leaving 1" to 1 1/2" of the can with the top. Pour the beer into a cup(cause we dont want to waste good beer). In the bottom section of the can you will want to leave about an inch of beer. Then you will take the Dove meat and put it in the bottom can. Sprinkle the minced garlic in with a little salt and pepper. Put the butter in on top. Now be careful not to cut yourself but slightly crimp the top of the bottom section of the can. Now put the top of the can back on the bottom so that they fit snug. Take the can and place it in the camp fire. Cook for 7-8 min depending on coals. Take can out and allow to cool. Pop a top and you got Finger licking Dove bites. Enjoy.

REMEMBER YOU CAN GET RECIPES LIKE THIS AND MANY MORE OUT OF MY COOKBOOK.

How to Protect Yourself from Mosquito Bites

In the summertime, we must be very cautious to avoid mosquito bites and mosquito-borne diseases such as the West Nile Virus, malaria, yellow fever, and dengue fever. When temperatures begin rising around spring and summer, mosquitoes begin to hatch and look for food. Female mosquitoes must feed on blood to survive and to develop eggs, while non-biting male mosquitoes prefer nectar and plant juices.

Cutting Bits

Have you ever wondered why mosquito bites itch and how mosquitoes transfer diseases to us? When a mosquito finds you, it uses chemical sensors in its nose, called a proboscis, to detect blood. When the mosquito bites, it uses two of its mouths to cut through tissue. Then another mouth continuously injects saliva into you while another mouth quickly draws blood. A mosquito can rapidly draw about four times its weight in blood, which luckily for us is only about one-millionth of our blood. The saliva works as an anticoagulant, which creates an easy flow of blood from you to the mosquito and prevents you from noticing the bite.

Cutting Bits

Unfortunately, it is this saliva that causes diseases and the itching afterwards. Our bodies react to the saliva with a histamine response. This makes the skin around the bite itch. Although the itching is irritating, in some ways this reaction is a good thing because it causes us to notice the bite. This can be helpful if we develop flu symptoms shortly after because we can connect the bite with the flu, and can then see a doctor to see if we have a mosquito-borne illness.

So how do you protect yourself from a mosquito bite? One way is to wear a mosquito hat to protect your face and neck without using harsh chemicals. These hats come in various styles, including a baseball cap and bucket hat, but contain fine mesh netting tucked in the crown. When you need the protection, you pull the highly visible netting out from the hidden pocket in the crown of the hat, pull it down to your collarbone, and cinch it tight to keep all biting bugs out. Also, you can wear light colored clothing because mosquitoes are more attracted to darker colors.

Another protection tool is chemical or organic mosquito repellants. These repellants block the sensing mechanisms that mosquitoes have in their antennae to detect hosts through carbon dioxide, moisture, and heat. Mosquitoes get lost in the flight to us with these repellants. DEET is one of the strongest repellants. It is especially useful in jungle and heavily forested areas.

Besides traditional chemical repellants, oils have been shown to repel mosquitoes for a few hours as well. These oils include citronella, geranium, peppermint, rosemary, cedarwood, lavender, and the most effective--catnip oil. Although these oils won't last as long as repellants like DEET, they can repel mosquitoes for about 2 to 3 hours.

Another tip is to be more cautious during the early morning hours around sunrise and after the sunset. Mosquitoes like to come out when the temperature is around 45 to 68 degrees. Be especially cautious if you live near large bodies of water, such as a lake, or if you live in humid or marshy areas where mosquitoes breed.

If you do happen to get bit, you can stop the itching by rubbing the inside of a banana skin on the bite. Other solutions include using Vicks vapor rub, aloe vera, baking soda, lemon juice, mint toothpaste, or pharmacy antihistamines. If you don't have any of these items, you can use your saliva or stab an X in the bite with your nail or sharp object to stop the itching for up to 8 hours. Be aware that if you contract a disease from the bite, it may take a few hours or even a few weeks for symptoms to appear.

Hopefully this guide will help keep you free from mosquito bites during the warm weather so you can enjoy the outdoors.

Added Too Much Spice To Your Dishes? Don't Fret - Here Are 3 Excellent Tips To Make It Good!

Every cook has had those nightmares when the food is too spicy or too strong. While a dinner that's taken a few hours to create may seem to be ruined, there are a few tips and tricks to save the dinner and your reputation in the kitchen.

Cutting Bits

1. Oftentimes the best and simplest way to fix a problem of too much anything is by rinsing it off. This isn't always the most desirable thing to do, and it sometimes isn't even an option, but it can sometimes be done for a quick fix. For instance, if too much salt or pepper was added to corn, either strain it and rinse, or add more corn to the pot to cut the taste. Sine more corn isn't always on hand, rinsing may be the only option, and all is not lost, it can very easily be reheated in a pan and if there is any extra corn that wasn't used to cut the taste, it can be stored for later use.

Cutting Bits

2. The issue of adding too much can often be a bit trickier however when talking about liquids. Once liquids have been mixed into the pot, especially if there are already other liquids in there, it is impossible to take out the excess. For instance, if too much vinegar is added, mixing in a pinch of sugar often does a great job to cut the taste. Be sure though, when using this tip to add only little bits of sugar at a time and taste, add more if needed; this way you won't add too much sugar and your dish won't be too sweet! The other option, which won't often be possible, is rinsing the food.

3. If too much water is added to the food, often a little flour can go a long way in thickening up the soup or stew. It should be used judiciously, and always stir well to avoid clumping. Just know that all is not lost if a little too much of something is added. Searching the internet can be a great place to find tips and tricks for rectifying a mistake in the kitchen. The most important thing is don't stress and be flexible. While your dish may not come out as originally intended, it may come out even better! Or your family won't even realize the mistake. And if worse comes to worse, ordering from Pizza Hut will surely be welcome by the kids!

The Process of Making Handmade Cowboy Spurs

There are many steps that go into making a pair of handmade cowboy spurs. There are at least three different spur making processes; welded shank spurs, one piece hand forged spurs, and riveted shank spurs. This article covers the process of making a welded shank spur.

Cutting Bits

Since this is a working cowboy spur, I will start off with the specifications. Heel band width 1 1/8 inches, shank length 2 ¼ inches, and 2 inch 20 point rowels. The best material for the heel bands is 4130 aircraft alloy. It is steel that wears well and has enough toughness to withstand hard daily use. This material has just the right hardness and spring to maintain its shape around the heel band of the cowboy boot.

Cutting Bits

Next is the spur shank, this material needs to be ½ inch thick hot rolled or cold rolled steel is fine. I then make a trip to the pattern cabinet to find a tin pattern from the archives. I will be using a 2½ inch shank pattern with a chap guard. The chap guard is a raised up portion on top of the shank to keep the cowboys chaps from getting caught in the spur rowel.

The material for the spur rowel can be anything from plow disc steel, 1018 mild steel, 4130, or oil hardening 01 like knife makers use to make handmade knives.

Now that we have the materials covered we can start the spur making process.

1. Form the heel bands by using a heel band fixture the size of the cowboy boot heel.

2. The spur shanks need to be torched out of the ½ inch thick metal and profiled to the shape of the tin pattern.

3. Make the spur rowels by grinding 2 inch circles. In this case, use 1/8 inch mild steel cold rolled. Cold rolled steel doesn't have a crust on it like hot rolled steel but either one will work for this. Next, lay out the spokes by drawing the teeth or spokes on to a thick piece of poster board. Use a leather craft knife to cut the spokes out in the most precise manner you possibly can. After your pattern suits you it would be a good idea to transfer the design to a piece of 22 gauge tin and hand file the tin pattern. Then you will have a permanent pattern for many years of use.

4. With heel bands and shanks prepared and ready, it is time to weld the shanks on to the heel bands. Put one heel band in the jig and using a shank tree to set the spur shanks in place. Now it is time to tack the shanks on the top side by using a tig or mig welder - but acetylene welding can also be done successfully.

5. Blend the welds where the shanks are welded on by using a grinding rock (or hand file) and then go to a belt sander to finish up the blending of the welds.

6. Cut the spur rowel slot with an abrasive wheel much like a cutoff saw uses. My slot cutting tool is a ¼ horse Baldor motor with a platform to set the spur on while the shank slot is being cut. Drill a 3/16 inch hole in the tip of the shank for the spur rowel pins. Bevel it slightly with a 5/16 inch drill bit so that the rowel pin will stay in place after it has been pinned.

7. Now it is time to put the rowels in the shanks. Use a blacksmith anvil and take the round end of a ball peen hammer and with a very light touch tap the pins so that they flare enough to hold the rowels in place. Do not over rivet the rowel pins to the point that it restricts the rowels from spinning freely.

8. It is now time to put a final polish on the outside of the spur and clean up any hammer marks. It can be done by hand with sandpaper or on a belt grinder using the slack belt method. (not a platen) The inside of the heel band also needs to clean and finished. You don't want any sharp edges on the inside of the heel band. Using this process you will have a pair of handmade cowboy spurs that will last for years to come.

9. Stamp a makers mark on each spur. It is important to brand the spurs with the maker's name and a style number or spur sequence number. This is helpful for identification and recordkeeping.

Always use protective glasses, ear plugs, breathing mask for safety.

Quick and Simple Dinosaur Themed Party Treats - Dinosaur Savoury Nests

Oh No! My Little Monster Wants a Dinosaur Themed Party

Cutting Bits

It is a nightmare scenario for every parent. Your little monster has set his/her heart on having a dinosaur themed party and the day is rapidly approaching and you don't know quite what to do. We have written a number of helpful articles on this very subject, this piece will provide further information about how to tackle that difficult issue of the party food. Many parents and guardians that we talk to, simply rush out on the morning of the party and buy as much pre-packaged and ready-made party food as they can. This can be very expensive and whilst this may be one option, in this article we provide a simple and cheap idea for a savoury dinosaur themed dish so that you can create your own delightful dinosaur feast.

Planning - The Key to Creative Dinosaur Party Food

You don't have to be a Jamie Oliver or Heston Blumenthal to create an imaginative spread for a dinosaur themed party such as a child's birthday party or some other event. The key to successful party food is planning, a few minutes thinking about and jotting down what you intend to do and what type of food you want to present can help to lower stress levels considerably. More importantly, in these difficult times, it can help you to stick to a budget and not go overboard in terms of expense. For young dinosaur fans at a birthday party, remember you are in control when it comes to the catering, as the parent or guardian you want to do you best for your young palaeontologist and you will come up trumps with a little thought about what you will do prior to the big day.

Firstly, you have total control over how much food you are going to need as you control the invites. Invitations can be produced cheaply by making them yourself, or by purchasing some party invites from a shop. If you are having a dinosaur themed party you can "theme up" plain invitations by simply purchasing a pack of dinosaur stickers and putting them on. Remember to have an RSVP element to your invite, this way you can keep tabs on numbers. With an idea of how many children are going to attend, this gives you a handle on how much food you are going to need. Remember to always make a little extra, just in case you get one or two extras coming along, and don't forget that your guests may have a little sister or brother that might want something to eat as well. Best to put some light bites to one side for the parents too.

A Savoury Dinosaur Themed Dish - Hatching Dinos (Baked Potatoes Dinosaur Nests)

Impress your guests (and the mums and dads) with this simple, fool-proof recipe for making a dish that resembles a nest of hatching dinosaurs - just like you see on the dinosaur themed documentaries and in the films at the cinema. Surprisingly, there are no eggs in this particular recipe, we use baked potatoes and hot dog sausages instead.

This recipe requires the following ingredients:

* Small, white potatoes (try to get even sized potatoes, roughly oval in shape

* Hot-dog sausages, the sort that you can buy in a tin and boil to cook, although most pork sausages seem to work fine

* Salad cream or mayonnaise

* Tomato sauce

* One red and one green pepper

* Butter and a little salt

* A little lettuce/salad

Total time - ninety minutes (including cooking time)

Aim to use one potato for each guest with a 10-20% surplus to cover second helpings and such like. A successful dinosaur themed party means preparing a range of food (don't forget to check nut allergies) and this dish is designed to provide each guest with their own dinosaur hatchling to consume with one or two other hatching dinos prepared to cater for second helpings and so on. For example, with twelve party guests I have made sixteen potato dinosaur eggs and this seems to work well.

First turn the oven on to 180 degrees Celsius or gas mark 6 to allow it to warm up. Then wash the potatoes, give them a scrub with a small scrubbing-brush to remove all signs of dirt and blemishes. When washed, wipe dry and then smear on a little butter or butter-like spread and give them a quick dash of salt. This will help the skins crisp up nice and crunchy. Then wrap each one in a small piece of tin foil, if you have any metal skewers, stick a skewer into each potato, through the foil so that the skewer penetrates right through the potato. The metal skewer will conduct heat right to the centre of the baked potato and it will cook much quicker.

Place the potatoes onto a metal baking tray and place onto the middle shelf of your hot oven. Remember to use oven gloves, it does not bode well if the party host has burnt fingers.

Small potatoes will take about sixty to seventy minutes to bake. You can check that they are cooked by picking them up (with the oven gloves of course), then should feel soft and the skewer can be removed easily from the baked spud.

Before the baked potatoes are finished, start the hot dog sausages, cook them in a pan of boiling water, or if using port sausages simply grill them. You will need one sausage for every two baked potatoes. When the sausages are cooked, cut a wedge shape out of each end of a sausage to make a mouth. Using the red pepper and a sharp knife cut a sliver of pepper to resemble a tongue push it inside the dinosaur's "mouth", do this at both ends of the sausage. Then cut the sausage in half to make two baby dinosaur heads. Cut tiny slits, above the mouth, slightly further back and to the side. These are going to be the eyes, cut out slivers of green peppers and put these in the slits, we found that little diamond-shaped pieces looked the best.

Now it is simply a case of putting the baby dinosaurs into their potato nests. Cut a cross in the top of each baked potato, make it large enough to stuff in a hot dog sausage. Open up the potatoes using a fork and place some mayonnaise (light mayonnaise is healthier) in the middle, add a squeeze of tomato sauce.

To finish your dinosaur nest, push a sausage half into each baked potato cross, place these "eggs" onto a serving platter, a plate covered in foil will suffice. Surround these hatching dinosaurs with some nesting materials, add some salad leaves and there you have it, your completed dinosaur nest ready for the young palaeontologists to tuck in.

This dish is easy to make, looks great and provides a relatively healthy alternative to pies and baked pastries.

Boneless Chicken Thigh Recipes

Chicken thighs are often overlooked in recipes because of the popularity of boneless chicken breasts, which are more in demand. However, chicken thighs are juicier and much more flavorful. They are also very economical and if you are on a tight budget, there are lots of chicken thigh recipes you can make, whether you are looking for something international like easy chicken enchiladas or something for the summer like grilled chicken recipes.

Cutting Bits

You can use boneless chicken thighs in casseroles and stews and pretty much any dish where you would normally use chicken breast. You might like to use some chicken breast and some chicken thigh, for a contrast in flavors and textures.

How to De-Bone a Chicken Thigh

Bone-in chicken is cheaper than ones are which have been de-boned for you, so it is well worth learning how to take the bones out of your own. Taking the bone out of a chicken thigh is simple and it also means the chicken will have a shorter cooking time. If you are cutting up a whole chicken, you will need a sharp knife to slice through the joint where the drumstick meets the thigh. You will find the cartilage very soft so it is easy to cut.

Bone the drumstick using the same method as you used for the thigh. Cut along the top of the bone and slice deeply until the knife is touching the bone. You will be able to see the white bone in the cut you have made. Pull the bone upwards and away from the chicken thigh.

Cut into the chicken some more, so that you can remove the bone altogether. You will probably have to slice some more of the meat off the bone so you can get it out. Keep slicing away bits of sinew, tendons and skin until you have a boneless thigh.

Recipe for Crockpot Chicken Thighs in an Herby Orange Sauce

This is such a simple recipe and the fact that you can use a slow cooker means that you can leave this recipe to cook by itself all day while you are out. Serve this tangy citrus chicken dish with noodles or rice and perhaps some broccoli or beans on the side. This recipe serves four people.

You will need:

2 lbs skinless, boneless chicken thighs, in 1 inch pieces Juice from 1 orange Zest from 2 oranges 1/2 teaspoon crushed dried thyme leaves 1/2 teaspoon crumbled dried rosemary 4 slices crumbled, cooked lean bacon 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoons white sugar 2 crushed garlic cloves 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon dried basil 3 peeled, diced carrots 1 chopped onion 14 1/2 oz can diced peeled tomatoes 6 oz can tomato paste

How to make it:

Remove any visible fat from the chicken, then combine it with the orange juice and half the zest, tomatoes and their liquid, oregano, thyme, pepper, garlic, rosemary, onion, carrot, basil and tomato paste in a three and a half quart crockpot. Cover and cook on "low" for about six hours or until the chicken thighs are cooked through. Stir in the rest of the orange zest, the lemon juice, and sugar. Sprinkle the crumbled bacon over the finished dish.
