Quick and Easy Bites

If you are looking for some appetizers to serve for your next gathering or some nibbles to go with drinks, use this formula: bread, spread, main item and garnish. Such a simple formula offers enormous variety and can produce highly sophisticated combinations. We are going to stick to the quick and easy.

Because we are talking about appetizers or something to serve on a cocktail hour, we will choose preferably savory combinations. Many of these combinations will also work just as well as a sandwich that you can cut into small ones for a party or eat whole to solve the lunch problem.

Bread - Wheat, rye... Can you imagine the possibilities? Slice and trim the edges. Cut in 4 squares, 2 to 4 triangles or stripes. If you have time to spare, use a small cookie cutter to shape the bread into circles, seasonal shapes or funny ones. Children love this. We will skip any toasting.

Spread - Butter, savory butters, pâté, or cream cheese, plain of flavored. Stick to butter and cream cheese for children.

Main item - It can be any, meat, cheese, fish, caviar, a seasoned paste. Caviar or smoked salmon have always been popular with adults and cooked ham with children, although those are not the only options.

Garnish - From simple chopped herbs or vegetables, to pickles, caviar, chutney, relish, or a drizzle of flavored oil.

Some ideas

Choose whole wheat bread for a healthier option. Trim and cut into four squares. For each piece:

1 - Spread butter. Top with 1 slice hard boiled egg and 1/2 anchovy fillet.

2 - Spread butter. Top with 1 slice cucumber. Garnish with a little tzatziki.

3 - Spread butter. Top with 1 slice salami. Garnish with thinly sliced onion.

4 - Spread chicken liver pâté. Top with 1 small slice cooked beet. Garnish with ½ teaspoon chopped parsley.

5 - Spread butter. Top with roast beef cut to size. Garnish with horseradish.

6 - Spread cream cheese or, for a vegetarian option, spread vegetable margarine. Top with sliced tomato. Garnish with chopped parsley.

7 - Spread butter. Top with sliced cheese. Garnish with apple and onion chutney.

8 - Spread vegetable margarine. Top with 1 slice of boiled potato. Garnish with a few drops of garlic flavored oil and chopped parsley.

9 - Spread butter or cream cheese. Top with smoked trout. Garnish with chopped capers.

10 - Spread peanut butter. Top with sliced apple - rub lemon juice to prevent discoloration. Garnish with ½ teaspoon finely chopped white celery.

11 - Skip any spread. Top wit sliced avocado - rub with lemon juice to prevent discoloration - and a couple cooked peeled shrimp  -or more, depending on size. Garnish with Marie Rose sauce.

12 - Spread butter. Top with finely sliced cooked chicken. Garnish with a little curried mayonnaise with raisins.

If you are in a hurry, there is always the option of ready made toast. Do not limit yourself to bread. There are other savory bases to use. What about pastry squares or crackers? Use sandwich spread. You choose one that comes in a tube as your top item and squeeze it in a spiral shape.

Choose a dip gourmet dip for garnish, or explore the guacamole or bean dip options.

Make your own creations with leftover roast meat for a quick day-after meal. Garnish with roasted red peppers or onions.

Choose contrasting flavors and textures.

If you were to stop the next 22 people you met and inquired as to how many could explain how carbide router bits are used, my guess is that very few would have much to say. Actually, though, these little carbide cutters are used for almost everything we use made of wood. From my desk I can see a hand rail, floor molding, window frames, window trim, a desk, a chair, several doors and more that were partially made using these woodworking tools. Think about your cabinets, dining table, end table, coffee table and so on. All these have some feature that was cut using a router bit.

In the past, cutters were made of high speed steel, and before that they must have been made of the best materials available, but I assure you, they were not very good. I know, because I have used some old ones belonging to my deceased grandfather. He left a box of tools for me to have when he passed away, and I tried to use them. They could cut wood, but not metal. And the details would wear out very quickly, simply because the steel was just not that tough. He must have known some secret speeds and feeds to use, because, compared to today's tooling, they were very inadequate. In any case, I was all to happy to come back to my own carbide cutters.

Some obvious benefits are higher speeds and feeds, finer finishes, prolonged tool life, and higher dimensional accuracy. Since the tool does not deflect during use, the results are generally excellent. This is one of the hardest materials known to man, and has so many industrial applications that it would be difficult to list them all. But, just for the sake of demonstration, here are some of the more common.

As much as possible, high speed machining is the preferred method of using carbide. It can also work well at lower speeds, but the process will suffer as a consequence. The edges are very brittle and tend to chip when used improperly. Tool and die makers, injection mold makers, and precision machinists use them on a daily basis. In fact, it is difficult to imagine returning to the old days of high speed steel. It would be worse than only having dial-up on your computer!

Essentially, a raised panel door is fitting a large panel into the interior edge of a more stable frame. The slightly smaller inserted panel allows for expansion and constriction with weather changes without jeopardizing the stability of the door.

The look of a raised panel door is that of elegance, yet to many, it seems like a daunting challenge to take on. Rest assured, you can do this, just make sure you have the right equipment.

You can purchase your raised panel bits individually or in a set. Typically, the set includes 3 bits. However, depending on which style you prefer when creating your rails and stiles, there are variations on the router bits.

When making a raised panel door, there are two types of raised panel bits to consider; horizontal and vertical. The end product is the same, but the means to getting there are greatly different. Typically speaking, vertical bits are easier to use and seem "safer" as the blade appears smaller. The vertical bit creates the same horizontal bit cut by putting the longest axis in the upright position.

This gives the user more stability in the cut at a much higher speed and lower output of power. The downside to vertical bits is that they can't make cathedral, classic country, roman, summerset or French provincial styles.

If you are looking to make a straight cut, square panels, then many recommend using the vertical router bit as it is much quicker to produce a finished product.

A horizontal bit has a smoother motion due to its greater cutting angle. Typically these router bits are used with a router table ensuring an even distribution of pressure. Since the wood is cut while lying flat, there is less risk for injury.

These bits often come with a back cutter incorporated as well, saving you an additional step in the process. When it comes to a quality cut, horizontal router bits are the better choice.

Pozi Stop

Some of the larger bits have a Pozi-stop feature which allows the user to change between bits without having to adjust the cutter height. The use of the Pozi stop feature has meant that the shaft on the Pozi stop bits are shorter than normal to prevent stuck bit problems from arising.

The company's ¼ inch and ½ inch bits are the best sellers and the ¼ inch shank is particularly useful on smaller projects. These bits cut smoothly with the minimum of fuss and with the minimum of heat being generated.

Porter cable bits are unquestionably of high quality and if I could have one quibble it is that the ½ inch shanked profile router bit is not that easy to find with the ¼ inch shank being much more in evidence. These router bits will allow you to perform very good cutting with no chipping or tearout under normal circumstances.

Types of Drill Bits

Drill bits are equipments or tools that are used in making cylindrical holes. Drill bits can also be referred to as a drilling machine. Drill bits are available in various drill types such as metal drills, gun drills, screw machine drills, core drills, step drills, spade drills, forstner drills, masonry drills, dental or surgical drills, wood bits, twist drills, drill blank taper drills and much more.

Cutting Bits

They are designed to cut while doing a clockwise rotating motion. Several drill bits are coolant fed. They contain a channel or hole for directing the coolant fed near to the cutting edges. The split point drill heads of drill bits are used for chip clearance and for excellent centering. Drill bits can also be used in cutting aluminum, general-purpose metals, brass, copper, bronze, ceramic, and plastic, stainless steel, steel, wood, titanium and hardened materials. Twist Drill: It drills holes in plastic, metal and wood. This drill is currently produced with a width covering a range from 0.05 millimeters to 100 millimeters while its length is around 1000 millimeters. The most usual twist drill has a tip angle of 118 degrees. This is a proper angle for an extensive array of job. It also has a long series drill for extended length twist drills. It is not advisable to drill deep holes using this twist drill.

Diamond Drill Bit: This particular drill is used in the bathroom for updating or remodeling. It is also used in redesigning your kitchen decoration. Furthermore, it is used on ceramic, glass, tile, limestone, stained glass, marble, fiberglass, porcelain, stone, slate and porcelain tile. When using this drill, the main concern is to obtain water at the edge of the drill bit. Drilling fiberglass may be done with or without water but make sure that the fiberglass has ample amount of water just to get the drill wet.

Indexable Drill Bit: This provides an excellent performance in making short-hole drillings. Stainless steel is drilled 3x in diameter and only a short-hole must be done.

o Fly cutter: This one is often used to cut circles in wood and other soft metals. The diameter of circles may be adjusted by changing the cutter blade setting.
o Hole saw: It cut holes from one to six centimeters in diameter and has a center bit for directing the cutting blade edge of the saw.
o Reamer bit: The tapered bit of reamer may be used on existing holes rather than to enlarge holes.
o Screw pilot bit: This beautiful bit is used for drilling body holes. A pilot hole is used along with the countersink.
o Wire Brushes: It use to remove rust and to clean up metal and is available either as a wheel or a cup with wire brush.
o Plastic bit: This is designed with a tip so as to prevent splintering when drilling plastic. It is important to reduce the speed and slowly drill the other side of the plastic.
o Plug cutter: Use this to remove cylindrical shapes from the wood. It covers the screw using a small cylindrical plug.
