A Little Bit About Chainsaw Carving

Chainsaw carving dates back only to the mid-20th Century. Some of the first carvings created using chainsaws were produced in the 1950s, less than 30 years after the chainsaw was first patented and mass-produced. Exposure to the art form grew slowly, but accelerated with the national exposure brought on from the televised Lumberjack World Championships, where images of the grand sculptures were broadcast around the world.

Cutting Bits

While the subjects of chainsaw carvings are limited only by the imagination of the artist, most pieces use woodland nature as a reference. Animals such as bears are very common. Perhaps more than any other artistic form of sculpting, safety gear is very important for this art form. Standard equipment includes strong gloves, eye protection, a hard hat, ear protection and steel-toed boots.

Cutting Bits

Often the artist will choose a piece of soft wood of suitable size and mark it ahead of time to aid in the process of cutting. While most of the cutting is done using chainsaws, it is not uncommon for items like a grinder or sanders to be used for rough spots, texturing and other fine detail. More classic sculpting tools, most notably the hammer and chisel, are occasionally used to form smaller grooves that a traditional chainsaw would be incapable of forming.

Instead of using more traditional instruments for sections of a carving that would otherwise be impossible, some woodworkers have developed specialized blades and chains engineered specifically to be used for this task. A standard chainsaw has a long, rounded end and usually uses a toothed chain similar to a bicycle chain. The specialized carving chainsaws, however, are often designed to produce a much sharper point at the end in order to make deeper pivots in the wood. A smaller, finer chain is often used to allow even more control over the work.

When the woodworking is finished, some craftsmen choose to paint or stain their creations. While stain is often preferred due to the protective qualities and long-lasting results, it is only suitable for producing contrast in a small range of colors. Any colors outside of this range must include paint, which can then be sealed over for added durability.

While chainsaw carving remains a fairly young art form, more interest and exposure has caused a small surge in its popularity. While it will likely remain a niche art form, the large scale of the work and the showmanship of its creation assure that it will remain an active part of the world culture for generations.

How To Get Rid Of Couch Grass

Couch grass (Elymus repens) is very common in gardens as well as in vegetable plots - but it's not all that difficult to control.

Cutting Bits

It's a rather invasive weed that, if not controlled, quickly will take over a large area. Couch grass looks like any other tuft of grass, but under ground it spreads by rhizomes and long white spagetti-like stems, which will produce new shoots, from where new tufts will grow.

Cutting Bits

The new tufts will form its own stems and rhizomes - and the circle is complete!

On an open plot couch grass doesn't really pose much of a problem. If, however, its roots spreads and gets itself entangled in the rootballs of fruit bushes and shrubs on your plot - you have a problem!

Cultural control

Digging out couch grass is possible - but it's a bit of a task if it's widely spread. While digging, make sure to remove every bit of root you find, to avoid the couch grass re-growing and the problem worsening.

New shoots of grass should be dug out immediately - removing all roots. While digging out the roots - use a fork rather than a spade - to avoid cutting the roots.

Dug out roots should be burned or disposed off - to avoid them re-growing. Never throw them on your compost heap!

Chemical control

Glyphosate based weedkillers like Roundup is extremely effective against even heavy infestations of couch grass, and (if used correctly) should kill off the lot in just one application.

Leave the weedkiller to do its job for about 3 weeks - and promptly treat any new tufts of grass that may appear in this period of time.

The treated area must not be cultivated until the grass has died back completely.

How to Make Dduk Gook

Dduk Gook, or korean rice cake soup, is a type of soup that's eaten on New Year's Day. It symbolized good luck and fortune. Dduk Gook is an easy dish to make, with minimal preparation. There are many ways to prepare this dish, but this recipe will show you how to make the simplest form of Dduk Gook.

Cutting Bits

To make dduk gook, you will need: a package of rice cakes, eggs(fried and thinly cut), thin strips of beef (optional),scallions (or green onions), seaweed, and broth (beef, anchovy, or chicken broth works well)
First, you will have to soak the rice cakes in water so that they're easier to work with. Get a bowl of room temperature water, and simply leave the rice cakes in there for a good hour. The longer the better, as long as it's not too long.

Cutting Bits

After the rice cakes have been soaking for a while, bring the broth to a boil. This recipe calls for about six cups of broth.

After you bring the broth to a boil, add the rice cakes and let it simmer. While the rice cakes are simmering, it's a good time to prepare the other parts of the dish. First, fry the eggs and cut them into thin strips and set them aside. Next, cook some beef and cut them into thin strips as well. Instead of cutting the beef, pulling them apart with your hands tend to be better. After this, cut your seaweed into thin strips as well. Leave all of these on the side as we won't touch them until right before we serve the dduk gook.

After finishing these preparations, chop up some green onions and add them to the dish. Seasoning the dish depends on your personal taste, so we will leave that part out. Only a bit of salt and pepper will be needed.

After your dish is finished cooking , ladle the soup into separate bowls. After ladling them out, add a bit of each of the prepared ingredients on top of the soup.

Now, you are finished!

Cutting Edge Wedding Dresses

So you are shopping for a wedding gown, but don't think that the standard poufy white dress is for you. Well, fear not, because there are many great choices out there for the bride who is looking for something a little different. There are a wide variety of cutting edge bridal gowns available.

Cutting Bits

What makes a gown cutting edge? Well, for starters, it has to deviate from the norm in some, if not all, ways. It should be unique. A cutting edge gown should also be one that cannot be carried off by just anyone: it requires a special sort of bride to wear it.

Cutting Bits

Because these dresses are unusual, there is no one prevailing trend. The options are all over the map, which is great. It means that will a little looking, every bride will be able to find something that speaks to her. It also means that you won't see a large number of brides in any one of these offbeat styles, which is kind of the point of picking something different in the first place.

One style that you see on runways is wedding dresses with mini-skirts. On the top, they basically look like any other gown, but once you get to the bottom half...well, there really isn't much of a bottom half! This type of wedding gown should, first and foremost, only be considered by brides with great legs. It is also a style that would look out of place on a bride over a certain age. (I will leave it up to you to decide exactly what that age is!)

A mini wedding gown would be a very chic style for a City Hall wedding, or perhaps for one on a beach. If you want to give it a more elegant look, wear it with a long, plain veil. For a more avant-garde effect, a little pouf of netting on your head is all you need (see Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama). A dress that makes this bold a statement should be accessorized with restraint. A few pieces of wedding jewelry and pretty shoes would be the right finishing touches. Anything too overdone will cross the line into trampy.

For a style that could work on a bride of any age, check out the menswear inspired bridal gowns. They are created in standard white or ivory bridal fabrics, but have details like tailored jackets over a full skirt. This type of wedding dress is perfect for brides who have always loved the look of a woman in a sexy tuxedo as evening wear. It could also work as an equestrian inspired bridal gown.

For the ultimate in sexy, turn to one of the cutting edge gowns that have holes or cut-outs in them. Some have sheer lace panels in the bodice, while others have actual parts of the bodice fabric removed to reveal skin. They are often paired with full skirts, which does help to tone down the avant-garde nature of these revealing gowns a little bit. There is still something very daring about baring your skin on your wedding day. Prepare to shock your grandmother!

The wedding gowns with cut out bits should definitely only be worn by brides with very toned tummies. If you have a very pale white stomach, you should probably skip this style. Because they often have fairly traditional silhouettes, theses cutting edge gowns can be accessorized like any other bridal gown. Choose your veil, headpiece, and wedding jewelry based on the details of your particular gown.

For brides who like drama, choosing a cutting edge wedding gown can be the way to achieve it. These styles are not for everyone, but they certainly will allow a bride to express her own unique style and taste. Having a gown that really feels like you is a great way to make your wedding even more fun.

Christmas Sales MLCS 10807 TripleWing Flush Trim Bit 1/2-Inch Diameter by 2-Inch Cutting Length Overview

MLCS Tri (TM) carbide-tipped router bits are at the vanguard of routing technology. Larger cutters with an extra cutting blade (versus standard 2-flute bits) save time by allowing more aggressive cuts, and therefore, fewer passes. These 1/2" shank bits can be run at reduced speeds, helping to eliminate burning on problem woods, such as, cherry, oak, and others. The August '06 Workbench Magazine Review states: "While two flute bits can leave cutter marks...these three-flute bits produce consistently smooth cuts." TripleWing (TM) Flush Trim Bits are for use in trimming laminates and pattern routing. 1/2" Large Diameter, 2" Cutting Length, 1/2" Shank

What Type of Kitchen Cutting Boards Should You And Should You Not Use?

Love cooking in the kitchen? Well, then you probably used a kitchen cutting board at one time or another. The question is, what type of board should you or should you not use?

Cutting Bits

Well, I guess that answer is... it depends.

Cutting Bits

This answer will depend on your intended purpose, what style you like and how often or how much care are you willing to give your cutting board.

What is your intended purpose?

Now, I realize this may seem to be a really silly question... you want to use it to cut on right? Well, are you going to be cutting raw or cooked meat, vegetables, tomatoes or cheese?

Wood - The traditional board is the wood cutting board. This type of board is excellent for preserving your valuable knives from getting dulled on the surface and can beautify any kitchen with its traditional look. However, you should know that wood boards do need quite a bit of maintenance. You will need to clean it after every use... and it is suggested that you use a vinegar with water mix and NOT put it in your kitchen sink. Washing your wood board in the kitchen sink... especially soaking it in water, can significantly damage your board as water will soak into the board allowing bacteria to grow, as well, it will dry out and crack the board. You will also have to oil your board at least once every two months with a food grade mineral oil to help keep the board from drying out and cracking. So all in all, a wood board is quite a bit of work to maintain and clean... but nothing looks as beautiful in a kitchen as a wood cutting board.

Plastic - The latest on the cutting board scene is the plastic cutting board. Plastic was previously viewed as an excellent board to replace the traditional wood boards, as they are not as porous as wood and will repel bacteria much better. There has been much debate over this question and some studies have been done which actually show bacteria will grow on plastic boards... but will be repelled on wood boards, as the wood has a natural defence against bacteria. However, plastic boards are much easier to clean and maintain. A good bath in bleach mixed with water solution will help eliminate bacteria. As well as regular cleaning in the sink with soap and water... you can even put a plastic cutting board in the dish washer... now how about that for easy to maintain.

What style do you like?

There are three other styles that you may like, such as steel, marble or glass boards. If you are interested in these types of boards... you are best to keep these boards reserved for preparing sandwiches, making and rolling out dough or serving cheeses. All these types of boards are extremely hard on your knives... which can lead to dull or chipped knives. Also, marble can actually deteriorate and disintegrate over time if certain acidic foods or juices are prepared on them, such as tomatoes. However, these boards do present very well and can be used for sandwiches or cheeses.

So that again leaves us with the wood and plastic boards and which board is better? Wood will give you that traditional look for your kitchen... but will be a more work to keep sanitary and clean. Wood comes in a full grain plank width, full grain edge width and the classic end grain look. Bamboo, which is actually not a wood but is from the grass family also looks beautiful, is even 15% harder than maple, but still has the same practices for cleaning as wood. All of these cutting boards will look beautiful if you wish to keep them on your kitchen counter.

Plastic is easier to maintain and can come in a variety of styles and colours for a lot less than a traditional board. You can also pick up flexible boards which make rolling dough or sliding cut meat or veggies off the board and into pots or bowls simple and easy. Plastic boards also come in varying thicknesses which means you can store them away into smaller spaces if you don't want to display them on your counter.

What is your lifestyle like?

The final question that will help you in getting the best kitchen cutting board for your use is... what is your lifestyle like? If you are like most and have a million and one things to do when you get home from work, like preparing dinner before going to soccer practice... taking care of a wood board may not be one of your first priorities. If you love to cook and enjoy taking your time perfecting each recipe you create... you will likely enjoy the beauty and benefits a wood cutting board has to offer by keeping your valuable knives in excellent condition.

Either way, you will have to properly clean and sanitize your kitchen cutting board after each and every use... the question is what type of person are you and are you likely to spend the extra time maintaining a wood cutting board or just throw your plastic cutting board in the dish washer. That question is for you to answer but will hopefully guide you in your kitchen cutting board purchase.

Is Cutting Your Carbon Footprint Going to Make a Difference?

For a number of years now we've been hearing the call for people to cut the size of their carbon footprint; but will this really help? Can one person or even one nation really make all that much of a difference to the environment?

Cutting Bits

In this article we're going to have a look at what happened over the year 2009, and whether it's a fair indication of what effect cutting back on our own personal carbon footprint is going to do for the environment.

Cutting Bits

If you don't already know by now, there was a bit of a downturn in the economies of the developed nations over the last few years. That economic downturn lead to less demand for some of the products and services that tend to have a higher rate of carbon emissions, however, things weren't quite as they were predicted.

According to Pierre Friedlingstein, the lead researcher on the analysis of 2009 emissions data being published in the Journal Nature Geoscience, the demand in fossil fuels dropped by 1.3%; and that is only the equivalent of four days' worth of carbon emissions.

The prediction is that it will all start to get back on track again, and we'll start to see the emissions rate rise by 3% per year, a rate which they've been at since the year 2000.

The big problem seems to be the fact that the developing nations use far more coal than the developed nations, coal is far less carbon-efficient, and this caused a certain amount of balancing out when you compare the reduced carbon footprint in the developed nations with the increase in the less carbon-efficient coal used in the developing nations.

For instance, in 2009 the carbon emission of the United Kingdom dropped by 8.6%, in Japan they fell by 11.8%, and in Germany the drop was 7%. In contrast India's carbon emissions increased by 6.2% and in China they increased by 8%.

As economies start to get back on track, and demand begins to build again for products that require higher carbon emissions, we will see the carbon footprint of the developed nations climb again, and the carbon emissions of the developing nations continue to rise as they have been.

Seeing as the decreases in the developing nations were economically driven, and not necessarily as a direct choice of people looking to save the planet by cutting their carbon footprint, what hope is there that one person can make a difference?

Does the world need to go through a recession, or 'credit crunch', every few years just to make sure the amount of carbon emissions are kept in check? Even then, as we've seen from the 2009 figures, the effects are minimal, unless some of the developed nations can help to turn the developing nations a little 'greener'.

What's the point in going through, and learning from, industrial revolutions if we don't pass on what we've learnt so as to short circuit the process in the developing nations, and therefore eliminate a lot of the emissions that will be produced as they 'find their own way'?

So there we have it; is cutting your carbon footprint going to make a difference?

The answer we'd have been hoping for is 'yes', however, the results show that even something as large as a global recession caused only a minimal decrease in the overall level of carbon emissions.

Unless we find a way of helping out nations that are far more reliant on fossil fuels to produce their energy the rate of emissions will go back to its pre 2009 growth level of 3% per year.

Although we may not get the dramatic turnaround we'd have been expecting, if enough people did it, we could make some difference if we cut our carbon footprint.
