Free HDR Software

The number of available High Dynamic Range Imaging freeware programs out there rapidly grows all the time. There are some that stand out and can boast a loyal set of users, and others that help support the aforementioned examples by just not cutting it. For those of us who love HDR photography, and are just starting out on an exploration of what this realm provides us creatively, free HDR software is the logical gateway to creating our own body of HDR work. Below, an assortment of free HDR downloadable programs is listed.

Cutting Bits

I. pfstools

Cutting Bits

The pfstools package is basically a set of command line programs for manipulating, reading, and writing high dynamic range images and video frames. pfstools can be integrated with GNU Octave or MATLAB, so it can function as a broader platform for processing HDR images. It also includes Qt and OpenGL HDR image viewers. For those not wanting to work with a command line interface, Qtpfsgui might better be the way to go. Qtpfsgui groups the functionality of pfstmo and pfscalibration in a GUI interface.

II. Qtpfsgui

This is an open source GUI application that can provide a decent workflow for HDR imaging. Being freeware, this is rightfully a favored first choice as an introduction to HDR image processing. Great as a springboard if the artist seeks to delve deeper and more assuredly into HDR photography. Qtpfsgui is compatible with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Users just starting out should be encouraged to really explore its options to the fullest to get worthwhile results. Should be considered good enough for the favorably free price. Qtpfsgui will create HDR files from JPEG, 8-bit/16-bit TIFF, and RAW files. It can rotate, resize, tone-map, load and save HDR images. It can also copy exif data between sets of images. Qtpfsgui will also support a variety of formats such as openEXR (extension:exr), radiance RGBE (extension: hdr), RAW image formats, PFS native format (extension: pfs), and the TIFF formats (16-bit, 32-bit and Log Luv).

III. FDRTools Basic

FDRTools Basic is a collection of basic tools for the novice HDR enthusiast seeking to learn about what is possible with HDR experimentation. It will combine bracketed exposures into an HDR image comfortably enough. It will import RAW images, and prepare the HDR images for display or print with its tone-mapping option. It will also archive and export the HDR image in the user's choice of format. This freeware is not one that claims the allegiance of many. But, it is free and can be utilized as a springboard for learning more about the scope of HDR image processing.

IV. Picturenaut

Picturenaut, which has sprung forth from the German photographic arts community, has been developing steadily over the last few years. It appears to grow with consistent upgrades made possible by user feedback. Picturenaut is often favorably reviewed, but many find that it is limited in resources, therefore making available limited results..Some features of Picturenaut include image alignment, color balancing, exposure correction, and noise reduction. Picturenaut will also support various HDR formats such as PFM (Portable Float Map), EXR (OpenEXR), HDR (Radiance), JPEG, TIFF (32-bit Floating Point), TIFF (LogLuv), and TGA (Targa, no alpha channel).

V. Photomatix Pro (trial)

This is the one paid program that must be included here, as the trial is fully functional and it is a superior product for serious HDR photographers and artists. The main difference that begs full disclosure from the start here is that users of the Photomatix trial version cannot save their work without watermarks embedded in the image. Otherwise, the trial software is an amazing tool that will produce HDR as it is supposed to be, and can instruct the exploring first-time user on so much in a short time. Some key features of Photomatix, while generalizing for brevity's sake, are: merging bracketed exposures, batch processing, image alignment, deghosting, noise reduction and allowances for either 8-bi, 16-bit images. or RAW files. Also, there is the powerful tone-mapping function alongside of Exposure Fusion.

Types of Cutting Tools to Consider

Cutting tools are the most important bit of machinery that is required in almost all the small and big industries. But according to the requirement the tools are different. There are various types that are used in the industries. The laser, steel, diamond and many more are popular among the industry workers.

Cutting Bits

Laser

Cutting Bits

The laser cutting tools are the most advanced form of cutting tools. They are often operated by computer and the accuracy level is near about perfect. If you are in an industry where you need to cut the materials according to the intricate details of the sample, this is the best option for you. The basic principle of the tool lies in the emission of photon particles through light and this performance level can be intensified increasing the percentage of the light.

Cordless

The cordless types are generally used for cutting various metals. They are generally circular in shape and often contain a metal blade tipped with carbide which rotates in a specific speed. They can cut the metals with intricate edges and shapes. These tools are capable of cutting rods made of mild steel, the duct works, EMT pipes and many more.

You can also get the blades separately which if fitted in the machine can cut other metals like aluminum. The blades for cutting the thin metals are quite thickly indented. DeWalt, Panasonic, Makita and Milwuakee are some of the companies which are renowned for making these products.

Diamond

This is another popular tool that is circular in shape and can cut any rigid or coarse material. It contains a steel inner core. Electroplating, molding and blazing are the three methods of manufacturing a diamond blade. This particular tool is commonly used in the construction industry.

It works wonderfully to cut materials like stones, bricks, cement and concrete. The  materials  that are used in manufacturing a diamond blade differs according to the choice of material that is going to be cut by this particular machinery.

Broach

This is another type of tool that is mostly used in removing the extra material after a product is already manufactured. They just remove the excess part to give a perfect finishing to the end product. There are four specific operations that the broach cutting tools can perform which is Push broaching, Surface broaching, Pot broaching and Pull broaching. But they are not good when you are using them on blind holes and flat surfaces.

These are the various types of cutting tools from which you can choose the one that will meet your requirements and perform well under the tough conditions.

The Most Important 5 Bits of Advice For Owners of Pools

Having your own pool has many benefits for fun and for your health. On a hot Summer's day being able to take a dip is a great way to cool off and splash around with your friends and family. Having your own swimming pool also gives you the opportunity to teach your children how to swim. When you have your own swimming pool it requires regular maintenance to ensure its upkeep and pools can also pose a number of safety risks. So here are 5 helpful tips to help anyone who owns a pool.

Cutting Bits

1. Invest In A Solar Pool Cover - One of the best ways of maintaining the temperature of the water in your pool is by using a solar pool cover. The water in your pool loses heat as a result of the evaporating surface water. As ninety percent of the water's heat is lost through the evaporation of surface water a solar cover stops this process and keeps the water warm. One of the great advantages of this is that it also helps to reduce the amount of money you will spend on heating the pool.

Cutting Bits

2. A Good Scrub Never Hurt - Keeping the water topped up with swimming pool chemicals is only part of the cleaning job. Brushing algae off of the swimming pool liner and around the pool will also help. It is also a good idea to get a vacuum that will clean the bottom of the pool. An automatic robot vacuum can be expensive but are worth it as they can clean the pool whenever it is not being used. You will still want to skim the water with a net to remove any leaves or other debris that might clog up the vacuum or filter.

3. Check The Weather Reports - The weather can effect the conditions of your pool dramatically. If you have a lot of rain and wind it will cause the swimming pool chemicals to be used up more quickly. Hot and humid conditions have the same effect as both types of weather speed up chemical reactions. You can deal with these sorts of issues by regularly using pool shock treatments to keep the pool clean.

4. Balanced Chemicals - It is a good idea to get a testing kit to make sure you're using the right amount of swimming pool chemicals in your pool. Using a testing kit will help to make sure that the swimming pool chemicals like chlorine are strong enough to kill germs with out irritating your eyes and skin.

5. Replace Your Filters - Your swimming pool filter is perhaps the most important bit of equipment you have. The main function is to remove any dirt from the water and this means that they need to be cleaned a lot. To do this with a sand filter you need to back wash it, which is where the water is sucked up through it. If you have a paper filter then you can wash them with a hose but you will need to replace these with new ones regularly.

Easy to Make Guacamole Dip

You can make guacamole that people will rave about! It's easy, and you don't need any fancy kitchen utensils or appliances.

Cutting Bits

What You'll Need To Have Ready

Cutting Bits

Assemble the following kitchen items:

Cutting board Sharp knife A shallow-lipped dish or bowl, preferably with a flat bottom A potato masher, hand-held is better than an electric whipper

Ingredients (for one batch, feeds 2-4 people as a side dish or dip for chips):

2 Haas avocados* Fresh cilantro (usually comes in a small bunch or plastic bag in the produce area) 2 Roma tomatoes 2 fresh limes (not lime juice) Sour Cream (fat-free is OK) 1 package of Guacamole seasoning (Schilling, McCormick, or Lawry) Cumin (a spice) Your favorite salsa (homemade or favorite brand) Favorite tortilla chips

* Do not use green-skinned "Chilean" avocados. Haas (or "California") avocados have a very dark skin, almost brown, and the skin has a "wrinkled" appearance. To select avocados that are "ripe" (ready to use), pick up the avocado, hold it in your palm (like you are holding a ball), and squeeze very gently, but with some pressure. The avocado should "give" a little (that is, not feel solid or too firm). If it is "squishy" (really soft), then try another one. Don't buy too far ahead of time (I like to get them the day before). DO NOT REFRIGERATE prior to making the guacamole.

Making the Guacamole

1. Rinse the avocados. With a sharp knife, but avocado in half. There is a very hard "seed" inside the avocado, so after you've sliced it all the way around, grasp the two halves and "twist" to pull apart. You can scoop out the seed with a spoon, then scoop avocado flesh out of the skin and put in the dish or bowl.

2. Pinch off several leaves from the tops of the cilantro and rinse. Trim off stems. Cut through the leaves many times until as finely minced as possible. Scrape into avocado.

NOTE: Cilantro is very potent. Start with just a little bit. After the guacamole has been completely mixed, taste test. If you need more "zest," then begin to add a little more cilantro and taste. Continue until you have the zesty flavor that is right for you!

3. Rinse the tomatoes. Cut in small pieces and then mince as finely as possible. Add to the avocado.

NOTE: I like to do the cilantro first, and then the tomatoes, without rinsing off the cutting board. This way, you can pick up all the cilantro flavoring that's still on the cutting board!

4. Cut one lime in half. Take one half and squeeze most of the juice into the avocado.

NOTE: Limes can be very strong, flavor-wise. Start with just half a lime. If you need more of a lime flavor, after making the guacamole, you can squeeze in a little more juice. Be careful! Don't add too much liquid to the guacamole or it will be too runny!

5. Spoon in a dollop of sour cream (about a soup-spoonful) into the avocado.

6. Open and empty the entire packet of guacamole seasoning into the avocado.

7. Add a "pinch" of cumin to the avocado.

NOTE: Cumin is a very strongly flavored spice. Add in just a little bit at a time until you have the right taste that's best for you.

8. Add a spoonful of salsa (about a soup-spoonful) to the avocado.

Now that you have all the ingredients in one bowl, begin to mash (with your potato masher). Continue mashing until almost all of the avocado has been mashed smooth (that is, mash until only little chunks of avocado are left, some avocado will be thoroughly mashed like mashed potatoes).

Taste, using a chip that you are going to serve with it. Depending on your personal preferences, you can now begin to add small amounts of cilantro, lime, and cumin until you have just the right zestiness! If you go overboard on any one ingredient, you can offset with little pinches of sugar (add in a pinch at a time, mix well, and taste), until you have the perfect flavor.

Provides enough dip for 2-4 people. If using as a side dish to tacos, burritos, or fajitas, you might want to double the recipe so that you have enough for the side dish and as a dip for chips.

When To Make and How To Store Your Guacamole

You can make the guacamole ahead of time, although I recommend that you make it the same day that you are going to serve it.

Put freshly made guacamole in a glass dish or container, and refrigerate. If you are going to be refrigerating for more than 6 hours, add 1 teaspoon of reconstituted lemon juice, and mix in well. This will prevent the guacamole from turning brown.

When you are ready to serve, I suggest that you serve in a wooden bowl. Using a cut lime, smear the inside of the wooden bowl with just enough lime juice to wet the surface. Spoon in the guacamole.

For a festive touch, spoon a very small dollop of sour cream into the middle of the guacamole. Break off one or two leaves of cilantro, leaving enough stem so that you can push down into the sour cream (so that the cilantro leaves stand up). Then rim the outer edge of the guacamole with a little bit of freshly minced tomato.

Serve with chips or as a side dish to your favorite Mexican or Tex-Mex meal!

Will Cutting Carbs Help an Endurance Athlete Lose Weight?

Many an athlete has asked himself or herself at one time or another, 'will cutting carbs help me lose weight?' Others on the outside might be wondering why an athlete would still want to lose weight. After all, they are into physical activity in a significant way and this is a major component of weight loss.

Cutting Bits

Speaking from experience, you can be into activities like mountain biking, and be really into it, spending 3 to 4 hours daily doing it and STILL need lose weight. Why? The hearty appetites of long distance bikers is legendary. Just look at the food choices that are available either at the start, end, or at rest point along a popular cycling route. You won't see diet food here. What you will see is REAL food and observe how a mountain of food magically disappears after encountering group of riders coming in from a century ride. So yes, sometimes athletes need to lose weight too.

Cutting Bits

But the question of what to reduce becomes a major issue because the type of food you take in can affect your performance in a big way. This is especially true for cyclists because their intake of carbohydrates is quite critical. No, I am not making this up just because I am a cyclist, I have experienced the agony of carbohydrate depletion, otherwise known as 'the bonk'. It is one experience you will normally go through just once, because you will avoid it forever after.

That is why cutting carbs to help one lose weight is not the primary concern for athletes, it's more about what effect cutting carbs will have on their sport. Since the question is for endurance type sports then the only prudent answer to give is 'maybe'. Unless, you know for a fact that you are overdoing the carb bit. In this case, it might be good to stick with the better carbs and utilize sports preparations to provide bulk of your carbohydrate requirements. That way you are sure that you are not consuming empty calories which will make it difficult to reduce bulk.

So for the endurance athlete who is thinking, 'will cutting carbs help me lose weight?', study your carb intake and requirements, possibly with the help of a good nutritionist. Keep in mind that if you are a bit overweight, then you simply need to either turn up your workout intensities to burn more calories, or eat less calories, starting with the fat calories first. Of course doing both won't hurt, but proceed with caution and never do this before a competition. Remember, do everything in moderation. With proper planning, accompanied by sound judgement, you can achieve your optimal weight.

Makita 4131 Metal Cutting Saw - For Cutting Extreme Materials in Extreme Cold

Why mess around with trying to operate a circular saw in the freezing cold and having it fail time after time, because that particular saw is not made for extreme weather conditions? It is simply a waste of energy and resources. That is why Makita, a master at the art of designing and constructing power tools, has built a circular saw made for extreme weather conditions. That saw is the Makita 4131, and it is specifically made for people who fabricate metal, install or remove metal roofs, as well as for those in the plumbing and electrical professions. Besides all that, it cuts very decently at bitter cold temperatures.

Cutting Bits

The easy fit grip of the Makita 4131 makes it indispensable for a job where you just do not have the time to continually try to get in the correct position to make a safe and accurate cut. The Makita 4131 is definitely another win for Makita to add into their long line of efficient and well-constructed power tools. A one hundred-ten watt motor gives this saw a boost that a tool designed to cut such materials in extreme weather conditions needs to overcome. An added safety feature included in the Makita 4131 is a quick release mechanism that keeps the blade cover activated, thus reducing the threat of flying chips or out of control sparks from the blade.

Cutting Bits

The Makita 4131 is a metal cutter. It will cut pipe even as tough as iron, also the kind of steel you will find on the roof of a building, and it does it quickly, aided by its thirteen amp motor. Weighing in at about two pounds less than the average saw of this type, the Makita 4131 is easier to handle. The metal-ceramic cutting blade makes each cut quickly and cleanly, which allows for safer and easier use. Furthermore, the Makita 4131 is also backed up by 1100 watts of cutting power, giving it power and abilities other saws lack.

The Makita 4131 Metal Cutting Saw comes with features that can be modified after purchase, if needed. For instance, the chip cutting window can be switched out for a bigger window to allow for more chips to be processed. And though this is a handy feature of the 4131 Makita, the only real disposable part that must be replaced is the metal-ceramic blade, which will wear out eventually. All the rest of the trade ups or trade downs are optional.

The 4131 Makita metal saw also deters overheating with its cleverly designed ball bearings, allowing you to work for a longer period of time without having to put the saw down or worry about it wearing out from excessive heat. The 4131 Makita at ten and six tenths pounds weighs in light and feels balanced.

The Makita 4131's ability to cut two and one half inches deep gives it an edge in cutting steel studs and metal sheets off of metal roofs. Various types of metals yield to the cutting abilities of the 4131, and they do so minus the sparking that causes not only a health hazard but also the heat that can aid in the deterioration of the blade. The design of the Makita 4131 was definitely well thought out, and well carried out, by the engineers at Makita. All in all, the Makita 4131 Metal Cutting Saw is just a really well-built, well rounded saw.
